There are many who will be celebrating the day of love this week by going out to dinner. If your special someone wants to go out, never fear! You can still be successful on your diet without blowing it all in one special meal. You’ve worked hard thus far, and one dinner out will be just fine if you know what to expect and prepare a little in advance.
- If you know in advance where you will be eating, then pre-plan what you will order. Call the restaurant in advance and ask that they fax you a copy of their menu. Or if that is not feasible, check for solutions online. Many restaurants have their menus available on their websites. Plan and stick to your choices when you get there.
- If you can’t prepare in advance, then mentally prepare yourself. Order items that are baked, broiled, poached, steamed, roasted or grilled and are not swimming in sauces and gravies. Stay clear of items that say things like breaded, au gratin, Alfredo, butter or cream.
- Choose water or diet soda to drink. Alcoholic drinks put on the pounds and increase the likelihood that you will overeat. Avoid them.
- Don’t skip eating throughout the day in order to “save” calories for your meal out. This will lead you to become famished and overeat. Your food choices may not be the best and your metabolism will crash without being stoked throughout the day.
- Eat half of the portion that you are served. Restaurants tend to give portions that are oversized. Don’t make the mistake of cleaning your plate. Don’t be too shy to ask for a box for the second half of your food. Your waistline will thank you and you can enjoy the rest of your meal for lunch the next day.
Remember that you can ensure that the experience is pleasant when you are prepared mentally for the occasion. Enjoy your dinner out! Bon Appétit!
