Social events and situations can wreak havoc on your diet if you are not careful.  While you may not always have control on the foods that are served, you can control what you choose to put into your mouth.  With a little dedication, planning and ingenuity, you can beat the social eating blues.

  • If you are attending a social event that is pot-luck, then bring a dish that you can eat.  Find a recipe that you love and fits into your diet plan.  Chances are pretty good that you will not be the only person that will be relieved to have your dish present.
  • If you are attending a function that has a buffet, you have hit the jackpot!  Fill up on the foods that fit within your diet plan.  If you simply cannot resist a food that doesn’t fit within your plan, then take only a very small serving.  You will probably be surprised at how little it will actually take to satisfy you.
  • If you are attending a party, then focus on the activities instead of the food.  You probably came for the socialization instead of the food, anyway.  Stay away from the area where the food is being served.  This will help you to not give into the temptation to overeat.
  • Be prepared to say no to foods that do not fit your diet guidelines.  A simple, “No thank you.  Everything was delicious.” is more than sufficient.

Remember that you have the control over the situation.  Don’t give that up and let the situation control you.  You can do it.  I know you can.
