There is a secret to choosing a fitness program that is successful.  You will need to choose one that you will enjoy and will be willing to pursue in an enthusiastic manner.  One of the best ways to accomplish this is to experiment with various forms of activity and alternate them with your favorite standby activities.  This will help you to keep your fitness routine from becoming stale and routine.

If the weather makes it necessary to workout indoors, then try different pieces of exercise equipment.  There are plenty of treadmills, rowing machines, Stairmasters and stationary bikes to choose from.  If you find these activities to be a bore, then try enrolling in group classes such as martial arts, kickboxing, Pilates, yoga or spinning.  Swimming is another excellent choice for an indoor activity.

If you are hesitant about joining a gym and don’t want to, then there are plenty of exercise and fitness DVD’s and video tapes to choose from.  Try locating them at your library or the video store before you buy them.  This will help you to determine if you like it before you go to a lot of expense.  There are several pieces of exercise equipment for the home that are relatively inexpensive.  Try some hand weights for good measure.  There are plenty of options available to add variety to your fitness program.

Activities can be done outdoors any time of the year.  Try options such as hiking, skiing, tennis, running, swimming and walking.  Participating outdoors in the fresh air will add variety to your fitness program as well as provide an emotional lift.

Statistics indicate that only 1/3 of the people who begin a fitness program will stick with it through the end of the first year.  In order to beat the odds of dropping out and making your lifestyle change permanent, here are some tips for you to incorporate:

  • Find a fitness buddy.  When you exercise with a friend or family member, you will greatly increase your odds of sticking with your program.
  • Make time for your program by scheduling.  Placing an entry on your calendar will greatly improve your odds of actually following through with your goal.
  • Dress in an appropriate manner for the activity you choose.  Don’t forget to keep yourself entertained with your favorite music or a book on tape.
  • Consistently keep a fitness log or journal.  Use this to chart your progress and to help provide you with motivation when you need it.
  • Take time to evaluate your progress.  As you take the time to do this, you will be able to see the value that a fitness program provides you.

With a little determination, you will soon find the perfect fitness program to suit your tastes and needs.  Good luck and get moving!

I usually found myself unmotivated because I can’t see my progress. I can’t buy any propriatery software, so I decided to use MS Office workout journal and fitness weight loss progress tracking. But it doesn’t quite work also, I wonder why  I guess there is no Magic Pill that will help you lose weight fast and keep it off. I think I should find an accountability buddy.
