The Biggest Loser has been featuring Wrigley’s Extra sugar-free gum as a weight loss tool. The Wrigley Science Institute claims it can help dieters relieve stress and stress related snacking.
Studies funded by Wrigley say that individuals choosing gum over high calorie snacks following meals consumed about 36 few calories less during snack time. While this seems to be fewer calories saved than one cookie over time it could add up over a year.
I know what you’re thinking Wrigley funded the study. Well the New England Journal of Medicine did a study too showing that chewing gum can lead to weight loss. They figured it right down to how long and how many chews per minute. Try 100 chews per minute for the whole day to burn 11 pounds a year.
The downside, yes there is a downside to chewing gum, potential for stomach conditions from ulcers, burns and cancers. Given that sugar-free gum probably has an artificial sweetener in it (which sometimes translates to diarrhea in certain individuals) I’d imagine cancer would be a possibility. Meanwhile you’re sending your stomach signals about digestion that are very confusing and tiring to it.
I’ll drink a glass of water before meals to feel full instead or exercise extra to lose 11 more pounds a year.
