Did you know that your pool can actually be regarded as a piece of exercising equipment? Have you ever actually put consideration into incorporating water fitness into your workout routine? Water fitness can be a great way for you to increase your flexibility, your strength and even your cardiovascular heart health. And during the hot summer months, this can be an especially effective form of exercise as it allows you to stay cool while still getting in your daily workout. Water has a large number of truly awesome properties. For example, water offers a great amount of resistance when it comes to working out. You can actually work all of the opposing muscles at the exact same time. Here is an example: If you perform curls underwater, you will work the biceps when pulling up, and you will build the triceps by pushing down.

Water is also great because of the buoyancy that it possesses. Buoyancy is essentially the capacity or the tendency for an object, or a person, to stay afloat in a liquid like water. Water’s buoyancy reduces your weight as well as the impact of any exercise done underwater, which puts a lot less stress on all of your muscles, your bones and your joints. Exercises like running are actually very high impact, and can cause pain in your joints and muscles, but there is absolutely no impact in comparison with swimming and water-related exercise. Water exercises also work your core, which is comprised of your oblique muscles, your abdominals and your back. Many exercises completely ignore this important muscle group, but not water exercise!

There are many different ways that you can both stay cool, and get fit when exercising in the water. For starters, you can simply tread water or swim which is a great way to burn calories and build muscles. You may also consider jogging in the water, which is a great exercise in resistance training with a much lower negative impact than with traditional jogging. There are also a fair amount of different products which have been created in order to increase the resistance level you feel in the water, including noodles, gloves, dumbbells and buoyancy belts which are designed specifically for pool exercises. You can actually find weight sets made specifically for the pool.

Exercising in the water is extremely easy and fun, but it should never be done alone because there are some obvious safety risks involved. It should be easy to find someone willing to exercise with you though, especially at a local health club or a buddy’s pool. When the summer is over, that does not mean you will have to give water fitness up, you just have to find a warmer pool!
