A Restaurant Dinner Doesn’t Have to = Disaster

It was great fun and I was able to avoid the concessionary temptations that were placed before me and just have a bottled water. I did great and I felt good about my efforts to stick with my current eating plan. Then my husband threw a curveball into our plans for the day and suggested dinner out at the Outback. He was met with an enthusiastic “Yes!” and we were off to the restaurant.

Here I was faced with a divine dinner out and an eating plan that I was striving to follow to lose a few more pounds that I feel just need to come off. After all, I DO have a class reunion this year and my husband has a national sales meeting this summer that will require formal wear. I simply must look my best! LOL!

I thought about how I was going to handle my new dilemma. I remembered that I had blogged about eating out just a month ago. Here was a perfect opportunity to put to practice the very things that I had preached not very long ago. So how did I do? I did very well. It really wasn’t that difficult to feel indulged and make good choices in my food.

I ordered a grilled salmon, no seasoning, in order to get some Omega 3’s. Instead of a baked potato, which I would have wanted to load with everything, I instead chose some steamed broccoli. I ordered a side salad with the dressing on the side so I could dip the tines of my fork into the dressing and then into my salad. I only ate one small slice of the divine bread that they serve. I chose not to indulge in an appetizer. And I splurged instead on my beverage. I really didn’t feel like a diet soda or more water. Instead, I chose to drink a pomegranate lemonade. This was a great choice as it is made with pomegranate juice and the health benefits of pomegranate are many. (You always need to be careful when ordering a flavored drink or lemonade as many of the flavorings are just sugared syrups.) Oh, and I packed ½ of my entrée up in a takeout box to enjoy later.

All in all, it was a fabulous dinner out and it wasn’t disastrous for my diet. It can be done! Just think before you order, ask lots of questions and sweetly make your requests. You’ll get what you want and your diet won’t be lost in the process. Take control and reap the rewards.
